Overall visit

The Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris is presenting a new kind of exhibition exploring the friendship between three major 20th-century artists: André Derain (1880–1954), Balthus (1908–2001) and Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966). Never before compared in this way, their ways of seeing share the same exigency regarding the nature of the work of art. Driven by a powerful modernist urge, all three were passionately interested in the painting of the past and the art of distant civilisations, fascinated by "the dark forces of matter" (Derain) and, more broadly, marked by an acute attentiveness to the "marvellous, unknown" reality before their eyes (Giacometti). Even more so than the mutual admiration and affection they showed throughout their lives, their profound sense of artistic community is the guiding thread of this exhibition.

Great exhibition: intelligent and sensitive, very well documented and showing some pieces never showed previously. Good to see exhibitions like this.

Great exhibition! The idea of comparing these 3 artists, friends, on different themes makes this visit passionate. I urge you to visit it :-)

Not only a walk among friends because these three artists were friends but also a walk among friends because the space and length of the show make for a good visit with friends. Always interesting to get a look at artists' personal relationships to see where their inspirations came from.

I really liked the paintings from Derain: colorful and easy to get lost in. Balthus work is sadder but I still liked the melancholy you can feel while looking at the child paintings. Giacometti remains a bit complicated for me to apprehend, but the mix of these art pieces was worth it. Maybe the show was lacking additional explanations on how those 3 artists and their works articulated. But this is still a great exhibit to go for if you're in Paris!
