Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) is one of the major French painters of the 19th century and one of the most important precursors of modern art. The exhibition of the Grand Palais recounts his astonishing career, in which he explored the most diverse arts: painting, drawing, engraving, sculpture, ceramics, etc. The masterpieces united highlight the work of the artist on the material and its process of creation: Gauguin will build his art on the repetition of themes and recurring motifs.

Though not an absolute fan of Gauguin's work, I had a good time at this exhibition where I learn quite a lot on his life. I didn't really appreciate the first part of the show, but then his art becomes somewhat brighter and colored which is probably easier to enjoy. The section on his life and work in Tahiti was cool as well. Overall a good show with many difference arts and technics, even if I still prefer his "classical" paintings.

Caught this show on a Saturday afternoon so while crowded it was still fairly easy to navigate. Learned about the artist and saw his work evolve which was fun. And a great mix of static pieces and short movies which made the visit more dynamic and educational.
